Organizing Your Storage Unit For Easy Accessibility

About Me
moving things from a shed to a storage unit

About a year ago, I had a tree fall through the roof of my storage shed on my property. This left me with the immediate need to find somewhere to keep everything that was previously stored in the shed. This was the first time that I ever found a use for a storage unit rental. I loaded up everything that I knew I wouldn't need anytime soon and took it over to the storage unit and dumped it off. I liked this option so much that I didn't bother buying a new shed. To get some ideas about how to store things in a storage unit, continue reading through my blog.

Organizing Your Storage Unit For Easy Accessibility

Self-storage units can provide you with a convenient place to store all of the items you don't use regularly while also allowing you to keep your living space free of clutter. However, these storage units are only an effective solution to your storage needs if you can access the items you need when you are ready to use them. The tips below can help make this task much easier by ensuring your storage unit is organized for accessibility.

Tip #1: Avoid Large Stacks By Using Shelving Units

It is quite common for people to create large stacks of boxes or bins within their storage units. The problem with this is that you will need to move all of the boxes in each stack if you need to access the boxes at the bottom of those stacks. This is not only time-consuming, but it can also be labor-intensive. Using shelving units to house the boxes and bins within your storage unit will allow you to avoid this process altogether since you will be able to easily remove just the boxes that you need from the storage unit without disrupting the other boxes in the process. As a bonus, the use of shelving units will help to minimize the risk of damage to your items by eliminating the risk that the boxes on the bottom of a stack will be crushed under the weight of the items stored on top of the stack.

Tip #2: Use A Color Coded System To Identify Items

Labeling your boxes or storage bins with written labels may not be enough to allow you to easily access the items you require. This is because you will still need to move things around to see and read these labels. The use of a color-coded organizational system can make this task much faster and easier. This type of system works using labels or storage bins in a variety of colors. Each different color is used to represent a different category of items. For example, the color blue may represent summer clothing while the color green is used for home decor items. When using this type of system to organize your storage unit, you will be able to simply look for the color you need and quickly retrieve these items.

Tip #3: Maintain A Clear Walkway Through The Unit

One of the biggest mistakes that people often make when packing a storage unit is that they do not leave any free space for them to move around in the unit. What this means is that they will have to clear a walkway each time they need to get something out of the rear of the unit. Choosing to maintain a clear walkway from the front of the unit to the rear of the unit will allow you to avoid this unnecessary work and ensure you can quickly access all areas of your storage unit for the purpose of retrieving items.
